Top 10 Best Throwback Mexican Candies

As a twenty-something year old, I often recall my childhood. It mostly happens when I’m adulting. You know, bills, work, and more bills. My comfort is looking for anything that reminds me of home, whether I’m a million miles away or 500ft from my house. Wherever I am in the world, I have a little box of Mexican candy with me, filled with the joy and laughter, and probably scraps and cries, of my younger years. There’s just something about eating a Paleta Payaso, Mazapan or anything Lucas that automatically makes my heart feel better. To bring you the same nostalgic smiles, I have assembled the top 10 best throwback Mexican candies. Enjoy a ride down memory lane!

  1. Pelon Pelo Rico

Pelon Pelo Rico is a very delicious, soft jell tamarind candy, but what's special about this type of sweet and tangy treat is it's small strips of tamarind once the bottle is pressed down. You pop the top off, push down and watch all the gooey sweetness rise out. After all, presentation is key for a child. As a kids favorite, the fun is never-ending!

  1. Rellerindos

Vero Rellerindos are hard, tamarind shaped and flavored candy filled with a soft and spicy center once you bite into it. This all-time-classic Mexican candy is spicy and sour with a rich, gooey center, both addicting and delicious!

  1. Vero Mango, Elote, Sandia Lollipops

Vero Lollipops are hard, mango, corn or watermelon shaped and flavored candy covered with a spicy but pleasant chili powder. At first taste, the mild-mind-blowing spicy outer coat of the lollipop is eased once you reach the sweetness of its core. Satisfy your craving for a sweet tropical treat with these lollipops. Vero Lollipops are bold for its salty and sour chili powder, but the reward is worth the couple licks.

  1. Pulparindo

Pulparindo is a soft, hot and centered with a layer of salted tamarind pulp with a classic tamarindo flavor base. Pulparindo of any flavor is probably the best-known, and surely one of the most delicious, Mexican candy in the country. It is sweet, hot and sour all at the same time!

  1. Duvalin

An ultimate traditional Mexican candy, Duvalin is a creamy, mini-sized treat with a combined delightful blend of sweet hazelnut and vanilla flavors. Its delicious soft and creamy milk candy, similar to pudding, comes in a small container with its own small plastic spoon. Best part was probably losing the spoon. As a child, there were no restrictions when it came to candy. All you had to do was use your finger or tongue. You looked like a hot mess but it was worth the taste. Must we say, it is a wonderful snaky experience.

Secret Tip: Combine both flavors for a new magical flavor. Thank us later!

  1. Limon 7

Sal y limon! Limon 7 is a salt and lemon powder that has an irresistible tang of citrus and a dash of salt, perfect for a multipurpose: eaten straight out of the packet, sprinkled onto a variety of fruits and snacks, and even beverages. But more so straight out of the packet! It has the perfect combination of two contradictory flavors: sweet and sour. It made you pucker and make the most embarrassing facial expression there could ever exist, but even if it was burning a hole into your stomach oozing down your throat, if you finished it all it was as if you gained a gold medal among your primos and amigos

  1. Pica Fresa

Vero Pica Fresa are strawberry flavored gummies coated with chili. These addicting little balls of bliss deliver the right amount of zing to your every tastebud! The only problem? You couldn’t JUST have one.

  1. Lucas Muecas

Lucas Muecas is a chamoy flavored lollipop with a salty, sweet and sour chili powder for dip. It comes with a twist on cap, so you can eat some now and save the rest for later! Saving it was best, putting it in your pocket while you ran to play cerillito with all your party peeps.

  1. Paleta Payaso

Chocolate-covered marshmallow on a stick, topped with a “clown face” made out of jelly candy. That’s it. That’s the candy. There’s something about a Paleta Payaso that warms our hearts on a bad day, even as a grown up. One thing that will never get old with this classic Mexican candy is the unveiling of it, wondering what face you got. They NEVER looked perfect.

  1. Mazapan

Mazapan is a peanut based candy made of crushed peanuts. A typical Mexican candy for all occasions! It easily melts in your mouth, providing your tastebuds an irresistible rich flavor, you'll never be able to eat just one! It crumbles at the slightest touch and opening one of these babies requires expert handling. It was more so of a game among your primos whether who would be able to unwrap it without any imperfection. I must admit, I lost a couple times in my childhood.

Fun fact: Mazapan is made of Marizpan, a confection consisting primarily of honey and almond meal. It is often made into sweets. Marzipan made its way to Europe from China, its country of origin. It was then brought to Mexico from Spain where it is known by its Spanish name Mazapan.
